Upcoming Walking Tour: Trinity Cemetery (uptown in Hamilton Heights)
Sunday, July 10, 2005 - 11:00 a.m.

Independence Day week occasions a rediscovery of Trinity Cemetery (Uptown), opened in 1843, once the scene of fierce Revolutionary War fighting under Gen. George Washington's command.

A few French accents are thrown in for Bastille Day, like the grave of naturalist John James Audubon, whose 19th-century farm lay adjacent to these burial grounds, and the adventuress Madame Eliza Jumel, whose nearby mansion was formerly Gen. Washington's headquarters.

Other notable gravesites include those of Astors, Beekmans and Schermerhorns; Charles Dickens' son; novelist Ralph Ellison; high seas adventurer Michael Hogan; 1840s pro baseball player E.R. Dupignac; Clement Clarke Moore (author of the famous Christmas poem, "A Visit
From St. Nicholas,") and many more.

The cemetery is on the National Register of Historic Places and surrounds the English Gothic landmark Church of the Intercession.
