FLOODING IN THE FORECAST FOR NEW YORK CITY
Tropical Storm Cindy
New Yorkers can expect heavy rain and possible flooding late Thursday night and Friday, as the remnants of Tropical Storm Cindy pass through the area. The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for the region. With two to four inches of rain in the forecast, and flooding of creeks and poor drainage areas likely, OEM urges residents to take steps to ensure their safety.
Flood Preparedness Tips
Seek high ground quickly if you see or hear rapidly rising water.
Do not attempt to cross flowing water that may be more than knee deep. If you have doubts, do not cross.
Never attempt to drive your vehicle through standing water.
If your vehicle stalls, abandon it and seek higher ground immediately.
Avoid downed power lines.
Stay tuned to local radio and TV stations for the latest weather information.
Review OEM's severe weather preparedness information.
As Hurricane Dennis marks the fourth named storm of the 2005 hurricane season, OEM reminds New Yorkers that coastal storms and hurricanes can and do affect our area. New York City's immediate coastline is densely populated and highly developed, making the City among the most vulnerable to hurricane-related damage. While OEM monitors tropical storm and hurricane activity throughout the hurricane season (June 1-Nov. 30) for potential impacts to the city, residents should also be prepared to respond quickly.
