Job Notice: URBAN PLANNER
Manhattan Borough President Scott M. Stringer seeks a planner to be part of his energetic team to implement a shared vision of progressive policies and community-based planning for the borough. Prospective staff members must be committed to seeking out new and better ways for the Manhattan Borough President's Office to connect with, and deliver for, the borough's diverse neighborhoods, communities and constituents.
The Planner will report to the Director of Land Use, Planning and Development. Major responsibilities of this position will include (but are not limited to):
§ Monitoring other land use activities throughout the borough
§ Tracking, evaluating and making recommendations on applications to the City Planning Commission, the Board of Standards and Appeals, and other City entities
§ Researching planning issues affecting the borough and preparing briefing materials as needed
§ Working with Community and Constituency Liaisons on staff to identify emerging planning issues
§ Working with Budget and Policy staff to identify borough needs and capital priorities
§ Attending community meetings
§ Attending community board meetings on local land use matters
§ Assisting community boards and community organizations
§ Providing administrative support to the Director, responding to requests for information
§ Developing self-initiated policy proposals and projects
Specific requirements include:
§ M.S. in Urban Planning or other relevant discipline
§ At least 2 years of work experience with government, civic or community-based organizations
§ Strong familiarity with New York City government and its public review process
§ Interest in or experience with parks and waterfront planning preferred
§ Strong research, writing, communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
§ Proficiency in all MS Office software products
§ Being comfortable in flexible, sometimes long work hours
§ Working well under pressure and deadlines
