Flight 587 Memorial Project
The City is advancing plans for the creation of a memorial to honor the memory of the 265 lives lost in the Flight 587 tragedy on November 12, 2001 in Belle Harbor, Queens. In consultation with the families and the Belle Harbor and Washington Heights communities, a site for the installation of a memorial was identified at Beach 116th Street in Belle Harbor, Queens. Artist Freddy Rodriguez was selected as the designer of the Flight 587 Memorial in November 2005.
The selection process began in the spring of 2005 that resulted in 68 design submissions, from which the six finalists were chosen. The selection panel, comprised of representatives of the families of the victims, the community, arts professionals and City agencies, chose Freddy Rodriguez's design. The final memorial design has been developed in collaboration with the Department of Parks and Recreation and in consultation with the families and Belle Harbor community. The cost of the memorial is approximately $4.5 million. The City is raising both public and private support for the memorial, including a maintenance endowment.
