New York City Council Launches $10 Million Program To help Unemployed & Underemployed

Unique "NYCWorks" initiative, to be overseen by United Way of NYC, inspired by 2004 report revealing startling statistics about unemployment among Black men.

City Council Speaker Gifford Miller, Council Members and United Way of New York City President Lawrence Mandell announced a Request For Proposal (RFP) that will launch a unique pilot program - NYCWorks. NYCWorks is a $10 million workforce development program that targets the unemployed in some of the City’s most distressed neighborhoods.

“This is an historic day and I am proud because this is the first City Council that has made such a substantial financial commitment to a single cause. Members of this City Council and the United Way worked tirelessly, for nearly a year to make good on a promise to help some of the most underserved people in our City,” said Speaker Miller. “The result of that labor is a unique pilot project that targets structural, long-term unemployment and underemployment. So while the Bush Administration continues to divest in workforce development we are working on creative ways to help vulnerable New Yorkers thrive.”
