MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG APPOINTS EMILY LLOYD COMMISSIONER OF DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg today announced the appointment of Emily Lloyd as Commissioner of the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). Emily Lloyd is a former Commissioner of the Department of Sanitation and a former Executive Vice President for Government and Community Affairs at Columbia University. She replaces Christopher O. Ward, who left the agency at the end of October, 2004.

"The Commissioner of the Department of Environmental Protection is one of the most challenging jobs in City Government," said Mayor Bloomberg. "Today I am pleased to announce that we have found someone who is more than up to that challenge. Emily Lloyd has the experience to manage an agency with a vast and diverse portfolio of responsibility as well as the skills necessary to balancing the needs of a broad constituency of stakeholders. She is a veteran of City government with extensive experience with environmental issues and large-scale construction and engineering projects and will make her an outstanding DEP Commissioner."

"I would like to thank the Mayor for this extraordinary honor," said Commissioner Lloyd. "The Department of Environmental Protection plays a critical role in protecting and preserving the environment of New York City -- from ensuring the quality of the drinking water to wrestling with quality of life issues like revision of the noise code. I am looking forward to joining DEP and to the challenge of keeping their many critical projects moving forward"

Lloyd served as Commissioner of the New York Department of Sanitation from 1992 to 1994. She was the Executive Vice President for Government and Community Affairs and the Executive Vice President for Administration at Columbia University. She served as Director of Business Development at the Port Authority and as the Commissioner of Traffic and Parking for the City of Boston. She earned a Bachelor of Arts from Wellesley College, a Master of City Planning from the University of Pennsylvania and was a Loeb Fellow in Environmental Studies at Harvard University. Commissioner Lloyd is married to William Goldstein, President and CEO of the School Construction Authority. They have two children Jonathan, age 24, who lives in Japan and Julia age, 22, who lives in Connecticut. She has lived in Park Slope, Brooklyn for more than 20 years.

The Department of Environmental Protection manages, maintains and renovates the City's water supply, distribution and wastewater system. The Department protects the environmental health and natural resources of the City and its residents and employs more than 6,000 people and provides 1.3 billion gallons of fresh clean water to New York City everyday. The agency manages a $16 billion ten-year capital construction budget that primarily funded by water and sewer fees. Among the projects in the agency's construction portfolio are the third water tunnel, the Croton Filtration Plant, Combined-Sewer Overflow Abatement Program and the Biological Nutrient Removal Program in Long Island Sound.
