Survivor all his life - on and off the field.
Survivor all his life - on and off the field.
Name: Michael Averett Lowell
Bio: Mike Lowell, other than being the sexiest man in baseball, has been a survivor all his life. Born on February 24, 1974, Mike has proved his strength on and off the field ever since.
This incredibly sexy Puerto Rican, Spanish and English speaking player bats right, throws right, is number 25, and is a stunningly sexy, stunningly strong, gold glove winning third basemen. He played for the New York Yankees in 1998, the Florida Marlins 1999–2005, and has played for the Boston Red Sox since 2005.
Lowell graduated from Coral Gables Senior High School in Florida in 1992 where he was a star baseball player and received All-State Honors. Lowell attended the Florida International University, where he was named Freshman All-American and All-Conference three times, he had his uniform number 15 retired [the first active Golden Panther baseball player to receive the honor] turned in a .353 career average which was the fifth-best in school history.
He was drafted to the Yankees in the '95 amateur draft. Mike graduated in '97 with a degree in finance and made his MLB debut in '98 with the Yankees. In 1999, newlywed Mike Lowell was diagnosed with Testicular Cancer.
Fortunately, Mikey did not undergo chemotherapy, but underwent radiation and surgery which ended his cancer. Three months later, on May 29th, Lowell returned to the line up and finished his rookie year with a batting average of .253, 12 home runs, and 47 runs batted in.
Yet in 2003, during his season with the Florida Marlins, Lowell was told his cancer had returned. Fortunately, after what seemed as an eternity of a wait, Lowell and family learned that the diagnosis was inaccurate.
Lowell had fibrous dysphasia, a structural anomaly of the muscle fibers. Lowell replied, "A freckle on my hip that on film looks like bone cancer.” Fans are still requesting a full picture... Lowell returned to the Marlins, only to get his hand broken by a pitch on August 30.
He lost his starting line up spot, but dramatically regained it after another powerhouse homerun in the 11th inning to win game 1of the 2003 NLCS.Lowell hasn’t just overcome personal and professional obstacles, but his family background is staggeringly inspiring.
His family was forced to flee Cuba during a time of great turmoil because of Fidel Castro, who Lowell stated “hope [Castro] dies.” During the 1960s and the Bay of Pigs invasion, families who opposed the ruler could leave the county. Lowell’s family was allowed one suitcase, a stripped of $125 per adult and $5 per child.
Everything else such as cars, furniture, cloths, toys, bank accounts, property, families were forced to leave behind once they fled the country. Lowell’s mother’s cousin never fled Cuba, who ended up being thrown in prison by Castro’s army.
Mike’s father, a former star of the Puerto Rican national team, stated, “He was beaten with a riffle butt so repeatedly he lost his eye… when he died in prison he weighed 65 pounds.” In an MSNBC article, Lowell stated, "My dad had to pack up his suitcase at 10 years old with his three brothers, who had nothing. And my mother was 11 years old and my grandfather, who’d been a dentist for 15 or 20 years, had to go back to school to be (politically) re-educated.”
"My cousins were political prisoners. My father-in-law was a political prisoner for 15 years because, at 19, they asked him if he agreed with communism and he said, 'No,' so they sentenced him to death," Lowell stated.
All Red Sox Nation, or any human being, would need to hear to understand the extreme tribulations Cubans went through would be this one horrible story of what this one family persevered through because of Castro.
As Lowell stated, “Life gives you obstacles. No one gets to cruise through.”
Lowell isn’t just a survivor in his personal life, but academically and professionally Lowell exceeds far above the rest of man kind yet again. Lowell excelled in academics, ranking third in a class of 300.
In 2007 Lowell batted in 21 home runs with a record setting 121 RBIs – highest RBI for Red Sox third basemen. To name some of the awards Lowell has won - which aren’t enough for this man - is the NL Gold Glove for Third Base in 2005, 4-time All Star, Tony Conigliaro Award Winner 1999 [given to a Player who has overcome adversity through the attributes of spirit, determination and courage] , Jackie Jensen Award 2006, TYIB Defensive Player of the Year 2006, Holds the all time highest fielding percentage for a third baseman (as of the end of the 2007 season).
He holds the Red Sox franchise single-season record for most RBIs by a 3rd baseman (2007) and in 2003 he was named the "Person of the Year" by the Boys and Girls Club of Miami.
Gold glove winner, cancer survivor, and World Series Champion, are just a few of the reasons that make Mike Lowell the ‘George Clooney’ of baseball - who has been to hell and back. And came back in 2003 with a game winning NLCS 11th inning homerun -which looking back now was a precursor to where Lowell stands now (on top of the freakin' world)
